Reading the website
The site’s own code does not include analytics, advertising pixels, account registration or remote font services. Accessing a website necessarily sends connection information to its hosting infrastructure, such as an IP address, requested resource and browser headers. The hosting environment may process technical logs for delivery, security and troubleshooting; this static site does not expose those logs to other readers.
Do not treat the absence of analytics as a guarantee of anonymity. Your network provider, browser, hosting infrastructure and any external service you visit have their own technical processing.
Local fieldnote processing
The fieldnote builder runs in your browser. Its inputs are not uploaded, automatically emailed or saved in the site’s local storage. Preparing a note only creates text in the page. Copying writes that text to your clipboard; downloading creates a file through your browser. You control subsequent sharing and deletion.
Your browser may retain form entries, a restored tab, clipboard history or downloaded files according to its own settings. Other people using the same device may be able to access those items. Clear them where appropriate, particularly after recording sensitive information.
Information you email
If you choose to send an email, the receiving mailbox obtains your email address, message content, attachments and normal email metadata. Correspondence may be used to respond to your request, investigate a correction, maintain necessary editorial records or address misuse. It is not automatically published or added to a mailing list.
Email and hosting service providers may process information to deliver and secure their services. Information may also be disclosed where legally required or necessary to address a legitimate security or legal issue. The site does not sell correspondence or fieldnotes.
Retention and control
Keep correspondence proportionate to the request. Messages may be retained while the issue remains relevant, where needed to document an editorial decision, or where applicable legal obligations require it. This site does not promise a fixed automatic mailbox-deletion schedule. Ask for deletion of correspondence that is no longer necessary; lawful retention requirements and provider backups may limit immediate removal.
Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, erase or restrict the use of personal information, or to object and complain to a relevant supervisory authority. Send requests to the privacy contact. Proportionate verification may be necessary to avoid disclosing someone else’s information.

An optional reduced-animation setting can be stored on your browser. It contains no fieldnote text or personal profile. See the Preference Notice for the storage key and removal control.
Following an external link leaves this site. The destination’s privacy practices apply there. No affiliation or endorsement is implied by a reference link.
Protecting sensitive records
Do not send exact nest, den or roost locations, precise coordinates for vulnerable species, or identifiable information about other observers. If a legitimate conservation body needs precise records, use its approved confidential process rather than general editorial email.
The site is not intended to solicit personal information from children. If you believe a child has supplied personal information, contact the privacy address so the matter can be reviewed and unnecessary information removed.
Changes
This notice should be reviewed when the site’s functions change. Revisit it before sharing information if you have not used the site recently. Material changes to data collection should be explained here rather than assumed from continued browsing.
